Although there are no known drug interactions with acamprosate, this medication has not been tested with every single other medication or supplement. Therefore, medications could cause negative interactions with acamprosate that are just not known at this time. To avoid possible drug interactions with acamprosate, make sure your healthcare provider is aware of any other medications you are taking, including vitamins and supplements.
Does Acamprosate Interact With Other Medications?
Acamprosate calcium (
Campral®) does not have any known drug interactions. However, you should always tell your healthcare provider about any medications or supplements you are taking before using acamprosate. Even though no interactions are known at this time, acamprosate has not been tested with all other medications. Therefore, a potential acamprosate drug interaction may be discovered in the future.
Many (if not most) drug interactions are caused by changes in liver enzymes. Liver enzymes metabolize (break down) most medications, and some medications may increase or decrease the activity of liver enzymes. However, acamprosate does not appear to affect liver enzymes, which is why it is unlikely to affect other medications. Also, acamprosate is not metabolized by liver enzymes, which also makes it unlikely to be affected by other medications.
Naltrexone (Depade®, ReVia®, Vivitrol™) can slightly increase the level of acamprosate in the blood. However, this increase is not significant enough to cause problems or to require any dose adjustments.
