What Is Avanafil Used For?

Avanafil Use for Treating Erectile Dysfunction

Avanafil was studied in men with erectile dysfunction due to various causes, including medical problems and psychological reasons. It was also studied in men with diabetes who had erectile dysfunction. In these clinical studies, men taking avanafil reported an improvement in their ability to get an erection and have successful sexual intercourse.
Avanafil may work faster than the other PDE5 inhibitors available to treat erectile dysfunction. Although the exact amount of time it takes for avanafil to work may vary, most men will find they can take the medication 30 minutes before sexual activity.

How Does This Medicine Work?

When a man is sexually aroused, the body releases certain chemicals that relax the muscles in the penis. Normally, these muscles are constricted so that blood cannot flow into the penis. When the muscles relax, large amounts of blood are able to enter the penis. It is this blood flow into the penis that causes it to become erect.
An enzyme called phosphodiesterase type-5 (PDE5) is involved in breaking down the chemicals that caused the penis muscles to relax in the first place. When these chemicals are broken down, the muscles constrict, blood leaves the penis, and the erection goes away.
Like other PDE5 inhibitors, avanafil works by blocking PDE5. As a result, the chemicals that cause the penis muscles to relax remain active and blood can flow into the penis, resulting in an erection.

Does Avanafil Work Without Sexual Stimulation?

No -- avanafil will not work without sexual stimulation. This is because the chemicals that cause an erection are released only when a person is aroused. Avanafil has no effect on these chemicals being released. It only keeps the chemicals in the penis longer.
