Drug Interactions With Dutasteride/Tamsulosin

CYP 3A4 Inducer Medications
The body breaks down dutasteride/tamsulosin using enzymes in the liver known as CYP 3A4 enzymes. Some other medications (known as CYP 3A4 inducers) can increase the activity of these enzymes. Taking dutasteride/tamsulosin with one of these CYP 3A4 inducers may decrease the level of dutasteride/tamsulosin in your body, making it less effective. Talk to your healthcare provider about your options if you are taking a CYP 3A4 inducer.

CYP 3A4 Inhibitor Medications
The body breaks down dutasteride/tamsulosin using enzymes in the liver known as CYP 3A4 enzymes. Some other medications (known as CYP 3A4 inhibitors) can decrease the activity of these enzymes. Taking dutasteride/tamsulosin with one of these CYP 3A4 inhibitors may increase the level of dutasteride/tamsulosin in your body, increasing your risk for more side effects. Your healthcare provider may recommend another medication for BPH if you are taking a CYP 3A4 inhibitor.

Phosphodiesterase Type-5 Inhibitors (PDE5 Inhibitors)
Taking dutasteride/tamsulosin in combination with a PDE5 inhibitor may cause low blood pressure (hypotension). Although this risk is probably less likely to occur with dutasteride/tamsulosin than with other alpha blockers, it may still be possible. Therefore, watch for signs of low blood pressure, such as dizziness or lightheadedness, if you are taking dutasteride/tamsulosin and a PDE5 inhibitor.

If you do feel dizzy, lie down. It is a good idea to sit or stand slowly to reduce your risk of falling. Also, make sure you have something stable to hold onto when sitting up or standing up.

Warfarin
It is not known if taking dutasteride/tamsulosin with warfarin will cause any problems. However, even small changes in the warfarin levels in the blood can cause problems. Therefore, if you are taking warfarin, you may need to be monitored more closely when first starting dutasteride/tamsulosin.
