Fortesta and Breastfeeding

Testosterone is thought to prohibit prolactin, a hormone that plays an important role in successful breastfeeding. Therefore, women who are breastfeeding should take steps to avoid exposure to Fortesta (testosterone gel). As long as vigorous skin-to-skin contact is avoided, it is okay for your partner to continue using the gel if you are breastfeeding.

An Overview of Fortesta and Breastfeeding

Fortesta™ (testosterone gel) is a prescription medication approved for use in men only. The manufacturer warns that breastfeeding women should not use Fortesta. Men who use it should take special care to avoid exposing women (especially pregnant or breastfeeding women) or children to the drug.

What Does the Research Say?

At one time, testosterone (the active ingredient in Fortesta) was used to suppress lactation in women who chose not to breastfeed. It seems that testosterone inhibits prolactin, a hormone important for breastfeeding. Because Fortesta has the potential to decrease your breast milk supply, you should not use Fortesta while breastfeeding.

Perhaps more importantly, it is not known if testosterone passes through breast milk in large amounts or if it could cause problems in nursing infants. There might be particular concern for female infants.

Can My Partner Use Fortesta While I Am Breastfeeding?

As long as you both take appropriate measures, it is fine for your partner to use Fortesta while you are breastfeeding. Keep in mind that you can be exposed to the medication through vigorous skin-to-skin contact with the area where the gel was applied, even for hours after it is applied.

Fortesta dries on the skin and slowly releases testosterone into the bloodstream all day long until it is washed off. If you think you have been exposed to the medication, wash the affected area immediately and thoroughly.

If skin-to-skin contact is anticipated, your partner must thoroughly wash the application area beforehand.
