Men Home > Generic Axiron

Axiron (testosterone topical solution) is currently sold as a brand-name medication only. Until the drug's first patent expires in 2017, no companies are allowed to produce a generic version. In the meantime, it's important to remember that testosterone, Axiron's active ingredient, is not a generic version of the drug; it is the generic name.

Can I Buy Generic Axiron?

Axiron® (testosterone topical solution) is a prescription medication approved for the treatment of low testosterone in men. It is a liquid that is applied to the armpits once daily.
There are no generic versions of Axiron available at this time, and Axiron is not equivalent to other testosterone skin products. It is cleverly designed to minimize skin-to-skin exposure to others, since it is applied to the armpits.
Axiron is made by Lilly USA, LLC.

When Will Generic Axiron Be Available?

The first patent for Axiron currently expires in February 2017. This is the earliest predictable date that a generic version could become available. However, other circumstances could come up to extend or shorten this exclusivity period, such as lawsuits or other patents for specific Axiron uses. Once the patent expires, there may be several companies that manufacture a generic Axiron drug.

Is Testosterone a Generic Axiron?

No -- testosterone is the active ingredient in Axiron, but is not a generic version of it. All medications have generic names, regardless of whether generic versions are available. The generic name is different from a generic version of a medicine.
In order for there to be a generic version of a medicine, the original medicine must have gone off-patent and another company besides the original manufacturer must make the product.
