Megestrol Dosage

Megestrol comes in the form of a tablet that is taken several times a day, as well as an oral suspension that is taken once a day. The specific megestrol dosage your healthcare provider recommends will depend on the particular product you are using, the reason you are taking it, and various other factors. If the medicine seems to bother your stomach, try taking it with food.

An Introduction to Your Dosage of Megestrol

The dose of megestrol acetate (Megace®) your healthcare provider recommends may vary, depending on several factors, such as:
  • The particular megestrol product you are using
  • Why are you taking the medicine
  • How you respond to it.
As is always the case, do not adjust your dosage unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to do so.

Megestrol Dosing for Appetite Loss, Malnutrition, and Weight Loss in People With AIDS

The usual recommended megestrol dosage for stimulating appetite in people with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is 800 mg per day, which is 20 mL per day of megestrol suspension. Doses of 400 mg a day were also effective in clinical trials (10 mL of megestrol suspension). Some people may be given this lower dose.
If you are taking megestrol ES (Megace® ES), your dosage will be different (see Megestrol ES Dosage). Make sure you know which megestrol product your healthcare provider has prescribed for you. Regular megestrol comes in a 40-mg-per-mL liquid, while megestrol ES comes in a 125-mg-per-mL liquid.

Megestrol Dosing for Breast and Endometrial Cancer

The usual recommended dose of megestrol for reducing symptoms of breast cancer is 40 mg four times a day (160 mg over the course of the day). The usual recommended dosage for reducing the symptoms of endometrial cancer is between 40 mg and 320 mg a day, given as several doses throughout the day. It may take up to two months of treatment before your healthcare provider can adequately determine whether the medication is working for you.
Megestrol tablets, which come in 20-mg and 40-mg strengths, are approved for this use.
