Megestrol for Cancer Patients

Depending on the particular product used, megestrol acetate (Megace®) can help treat weight loss in people with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) or to relieve symptoms caused by breast cancer or endometrial cancer. This prescription medicine comes in the form of an oral suspension that is taken once daily or as tablets that are taken several times a day.
When used in cancer patients, megestrol is approved for the palliative treatment of advanced breast cancer or endometrial cancer. Although this medicine cannot cure the disease, it can help ease cancer symptoms.
Megestrol is a type of hormone therapy that belongs to a class of medicines known as progestins. It is only approved for use in adults age 18 and older.
