An Introduction to Using Rogaine in Women
Rogaine® (
minoxidil) is a nonprescription medication used to stimulate hair growth in people with androgenetic alopecia, more commonly known as male or female pattern hair loss. Rogaine can be used by both men and women; however, there are certain Rogaine products that women should not use.
Does Rogaine Work in Women?
Clinical studies have looked at how well this drug works for women. In these studies, the majority of women had minimal or no response to Rogaine after eight months of use
(see Does Rogaine Work? for more information about clinical trial results). However, this does not mean that Rogaine does not work at all in women. In fact, in clinical studies, 13 percent of women had significant hair growth from
Rogaine use.
It is impossible to know beforehand if you will be one of the women who will respond to Rogaine. This medication will not work for all types of hair loss, including hair loss from pregnancy and medications, or sudden, patchy hair loss. However, it may work to regrow hair in some women with female pattern hair loss.
If you have female pattern hair loss and decide to try Rogaine, you may need to try it for at least four months to determine if it works. Also, make sure to use a Rogaine product intended for use by women.
Which Rogaine Products Are Designed for Women?
Rogaine products formulated for women are called Women's Rogaine. These products contain Rogaine 2% solution. Women should not use Rogaine 5% solution or foam (Rogaine Extra Strength). This is because unwanted facial hair, although rare, may be more common in women who use the 5% solution.
