Drug Interactions With Sildenafil Citrate

Some of the drugs that can potentially interact with sildenafil citrate include cimetidine, ritonavir, and alpha blockers. Drug interactions with sildenafil citrate can cause changes in blood pressure and also cause your body to metabolize the medicines differently than intended. Be sure to talk with your healthcare provider about any sildenafil citrate drug interactions that may apply to you.

An Introduction to Drug Interactions With Sildenafil Citrate

A number of other medicines can potentially interact with sildenafil citrate (Viagra®). Some possible drug interactions with sildenafil citrate can include:

Interactions With Sildenafil Citrate Explained

Cimetidine
In previous research studies, when cimetidine and sildenafil citrate were given at the same time, the levels of Viagra in the blood increased significantly. To avoid this possible sildenafil citrate drug interaction, it is recommended that you discuss alternatives with your healthcare provider prior to taking sildenafil citrate.

Ritonavir and Other Protease Inhibitors
Taking both sildenafil citrate and ritonavir (a protease inhibitor) together can significantly increase the levels of sildenafil citrate in the body. Sildenafil citrate should therefore be used with caution in people taking ritonavir. Sildenafil citrate has no effects on the levels of ritonavir in the body.

While sildenafil citrate has not been studied with other protease inhibitors, a similar reaction is expected.
