Precautions and Warnings for Sildenafil Citrate

Some Sildenafil Citrate Precautions and Warnings

Here are some precautions and warnings to be aware of when taking sildenafil citrate:

  • There are certain other medications that sildenafil citrate can interact with, including alpha blockers (see Drug Interactions With Sildenafil Citrate).

  • If you have a heart or blood vessel disease (cardiovascular disease) or significant heart disease risk factors, there is an increased chance of serious side effects during treatment with sildenafil citrate. In rare cases, problems involving the heart, brain, and blood vessels are seen in people taking the drug. These problems sometimes include serious side effects, such as a heart attack, stroke, or sudden death. If you experience any symptoms during sexual activity, you should stop any further activity and talk with your healthcare provider (see Side Effects of Sildenafil Citrate for more information).

  • In people taking sildenafil citrate or other PDE5 inhibitors, there have been rare cases of a condition called non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION). This condition can lead to sudden loss of vision in one or both eyes. If you experience any loss of vision while taking sildenafil citrate, contact your healthcare provider immediately (see Viagra and Blindness for more information).

  • The FDA considers sildenafil citrate a pregnancy Category B medicine, meaning that while the drug has not been studied in pregnant women, it showed no negative effects on unborn babies in previous animal studies. However, sildenafil citrate is not licensed for use in female patients.

  • In rare cases, people on sildenafil citrate can experience a prolonged erection, which in some cases can be painful. If you experience an erection for longer than four hours while taking sildenafil citrate, contact your healthcare provider immediately.

  • There have been cases of a sudden decrease in hearing or loss of hearing in people taking sildenafil citrate. If you notice this problem, stop taking sildenafil citrate and contact your healthcare provider immediately.

  • Sildenafil citrate does not provide any protection against sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).
