How to Get Rid of Razor Bumps

If you have shaved and you have razor bumps, you may be wondering if there are ways to get them to go away. First off, wipe the affected area with an anti-bacterial cleanser. If the bumps are left without treatment, they may end up becoming infected. It's a good idea to find a skin product that contains salicylic acid, as this ingredient helps to moisturize, exfoliate, and clear your pores.
 
Some tips for getting rid of razor bumps and burns fast include the following:
 
  • Use an aspirin mask. What wait? That's right, aspirin contains salicylic acid, which is a great exfoliator for the skin. Prepare a mixture of crushed, uncoated aspirin tablets (4 to 5 tablets) and add some water to make a smooth paste. Use a cotton ball to apply the mixture gently to the affected area. Wash off the area with lukewarm water after about 10 to 15 minutes. You can add a moisturizer to the skin after washing off the mask. The aspirin has an anti-inflammatory action that reduces swelling; it can also help treat a mild infection.
 
  • Tea bags. Good old-fashioned tea bags are a great (and cheap) way to help get treat razor bumps. How is that possible? Black tea consists of tannic acid, which helps to reduce redness and swelling. It can also help relieve the burning. Get the tea bag wet with some warm water and then rub it on the affected area for a couple of minutes.
 
  • Aloe vera. Known to soothe itchy and irritated skin, the gel from an aloe vera plant can help with the symptoms of razor bumps. Apply the gel to the affected area twice daily, but do not wipe it off. Aloe vera has several benefits, such as treating the itchiness and inflammation due to razor bumps and also moisturizing the skin.
 
  • Cornstarch. Cornstarch can be used to help with ingrown hairs. Dust a small amount of cornstarch on the affected area of the skin and leave it there for at least 20 minutes. Then, wash it with water.
 
  • Cucumber and milk mask. Using a mixture of cucumber and milk on the irritated area of the skin can also be a great and easy way to help treat razor bumps. Simply add ½ of a pureed cucumber to 1/3 cup of milk and cool it in the refrigerator. Use a cotton ball to apply the mask to the affected area of the skin and rinse it off after a few minutes. This mask helps treat itchiness and redness, and is also good for preventing ingrown hairs.
 
  • Apple cider vinegar. You can also dab a cotton ball in apple cider vinegar and dab it onto your razor bumps.
 
  • Witch hazel. After shaving, dab the witch hazel on the skin using cotton balls. Witch hazel has anti-septic properties that can help prevent razor bumps. 
 
  • Hydrocortisone cream. Similar to witch hazel, hydrocortisone cream has anti-inflammatory effects. You can buy it in most pharmacies and you can apply a small amount to help treat swollen and irritated skin caused by razor bumps.
 
  • Lemon juice. This naturally acidic juice can help prevent bacteria from growing in the ingrown hair follicles. Apply lemon juice to razor burn to help reduce redness and prevent infection.
 
  • Tea tree oil. This essential oil is a natural anti-bacterial product. Make sure to dilute it with a little bit of water before applying it to your skin.
 
  • Glycolic acid lotion. Applying a glycolic acid lotion to the affected areas of the skin at night will help exfoliate the skin and reduce the likelihood of new razor bumps.
 
  • Avoid plucking. You can try to carefully lift the ingrown end of the hair out of the skin with tweezers. However, be careful not to pluck the hair out, as this will only make the hair regrow deeper.
 
  • Stay away from products that contain alcohol. Do not use any products that contains alcohol, as this will worsen ingrown hairs by drying the skin and closing the pores.
 
If you have severe pseudofolliculitis barbae, you may need topical and oral antibiotics. Another treatment that you may want to look into if you have severe cases of razor bumps is laser hair removal. If it seems that the razor bumps are not improving, contact your healthcare provider.
