Striant and Breastfeeding

According to the manufacturer of Striant (testosterone buccal tablet), breastfeeding women should not use this medication. The active ingredient in Striant has the potential to decrease your supply of breast milk. Also, it is unclear what effects the drug might have on a nursing infant, especially females.

An Overview of Breastfeeding and Striant

Striant™ (testosterone buccal tablet) is a prescription medication approved for use in men only. The manufacturer warns that breastfeeding women should not use Striant.

What Does the Research Say?

At one time, testosterone (the active ingredient in Striant) was used to suppress lactation in women who chose not to breastfeed. It seems that testosterone inhibits prolactin, a hormone important for breastfeeding. Because Striant has the potential to decrease your breast milk supply, you should not use it while breastfeeding.

Perhaps more importantly, it is not known if testosterone passes through breast milk in large amounts or if it could cause problems in nursing infants. There might be particular concern for female infants.

Can My Partner Use Striant While I Am Breastfeeding?

It appears that the risk of testosterone exposure through kissing a partner who is using Striant is quite small, since the drug is absorbed directly from the tablet into the gums, not through saliva. There are no special precautions that prevent kissing in such situations.

Talking With Your Healthcare Provider

You should discuss breastfeeding and Striant with your healthcare provider. Each woman's situation is different, and you and your healthcare provider understand your situation best. After considering what you want and expect, as well as your current health situation, the two of you can make a shared decision that is right for you.

In almost all conceivable circumstances, it seems that it is not a good idea for breastfeeding women to use Striant.
