Generic Testopel

Although the patents and exclusivity rights for Testopel (testosterone pellets) have expired, no company has chosen to make a generic version of the drug. It is unknown why a generic Testopel medicine is not yet available or when a version might be made. However, it is possible that the demand for this particular product may be too small to make a generic version profitable.

Can I Buy Generic Testopel?

Testopel® (testosterone pellets) is a prescription testosterone replacement medication. It comes as tiny pellets that are inserted just beneath the skin (subcutaneously), where they slowly release testosterone over three to six months.

Testopel is made by Bartor Pharmacal for Slate Pharmaceuticals, Inc. It is currently not available in generic form.

Compounding pharmacies may specially formulate testosterone pellets for subcutaneous injection. These products are sometimes referred to as bioidentical hormone pellets or generic testosterone implant pellets. However, it is important to know that these compounded testosterone pellets are not generic versions of Testopel.

When Will a Generic Version Be Available?

This is a difficult question to answer. At this time, Testopel is not protected from generic competition by patents or exclusivity rights. In fact, brand-name Testopel was originally approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) before 1982 and has been on the market for many years. However, no company has chosen to make a generic version of it.

It is unclear why a generic version of Testopel is not yet available. It could be that the demand for Testopel is too small for a manufacturer to profit from making a generic version. Because it is unknown why a generic version of this medication is not yet available, it is difficult to predict when, or even if, a manufacturer will choose to make one.
