Testopel Dosage

When undergoing treatment with Testopel, your dosage will depend on your age, your testosterone blood levels, and various other factors. The typical dose for treating low testosterone levels in men is 150 mg to 450 mg implanted just beneath the skin every three to six months. Avoid swimming, using a hot tub, or lifting heavy weights for a few days after receiving your injection.

An Introduction to Dosing With Testopel

The dosage of Testopel® (testosterone pellets) your healthcare provider recommends will vary, depending on a number of factors, including:

  • Your age
  • The reason you are using the medicine
  • Your testosterone levels
  • How you respond to Testopel.

As is always the case, do not adjust your dose unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to do so.

Testopel Dosage Guidelines

The usual Testopel dose for testosterone replacement treatment is 150 mg to 450 mg every three to six months. Doses vary from person to person, and your healthcare provider will monitor you closely to determine the best individual amount for you.

Doses to start puberty in adolescent males who have late-onset puberty are usually in the lower end of the ranges, and for a short time, such as four to six months. Your healthcare provider will measure your child's bone age and take this and your child's actual age into consideration when determining an appropriate initial and on-going dosage.

Testopel is implanted in the fatty layer of tissue just beneath the skin in the hip area. It is inserted under the skin using a special instrument. Your healthcare provider will place a bandage over the area after injecting Testopel, but you will not need stitches.

After implantation, Testopel normally remains active for three to four months. In some cases, it may be active for six months. Tell your healthcare provider when you begin to notice signs of low testosterone again, as this may be an indication that it is time for another dose.

Because testosterone is implanted under the skin, it can be difficult for your healthcare provider to adjust your dose. For this reason, your healthcare provider may prefer to start you on another form of testosterone and then switch you to Testopel. If you take another form of testosterone, your Testopel dose will be based on your weekly dose of the other testosterone medication. Specifically, the usual amount is 150 mg for every 25 mg of testosterone propionate required each week.

You should also know that if treatment needs to be stopped for any reason, the Testopel pellet may need to be surgically removed.
